Bill Lawrence, 61 was living on the streets with his wife when he applied for a construction job with the Merced County Community Action Agency in 2008. Bill said, “most people look at you funny when you apply for a job and tell them you are homeless, but the Community Action Agency didn’t even bat an eye.” Bill was hired in 2008 to work on the crew of one of the Agency’s weatherization teams. By 2010 Bill proved himself to be an exceptional employee and was promoted to crew-leader. Bill continues to work for the Agency, has secured permanent housing, and has begun to volunteer in the community for youth programs.
